About Free Mars!
Free Mars! is where we can have some fun
and philosophize as well as promoting the exploration and settlement
of that planet. In the TV series
"Babylon 5"
(1993-1998) Free Mars was the small but valiant rebel force on
that planet struggling against the tyranny of the corrupt Earth Gov.
But J. M. Straczynski was far from the first to portray this battle.
The "Free Mars" image next to this paragraph is a small bit from A.C.
Farley's cover art for the Baen paperback printing of the
Jerry Pournelle novel
"Birth of Fire" (1976). In the Schwarzenegger movie
"Total
Recall"
(1990) protesters lurk in the background holding signs demanding
"A Free Mars".
And so on.
MN SFS is a chapter not only of NSS
but, we have also become a chapter of the
Mars Society. We resolute
few here at MN SFS have been struggling for twenty years with an
apathetic and jaded public, a penny wise and pound foolish Federal
Government with an actively hostile anti-space state delegation to
Congress. With the State Gov reflecting their views we can readily
sympathize with those fictional rebels of the future. So, with
right fists raised to the skies we shout "Free
Mars!".
