“400
Years in Two Hours: Bringing the history of the telescope to NOVA in
Hunting the Edge of Space.”
The perils and pitfalls of
making of a film in celebration of the 400th anniversary of the
telescope and the transformation of science documentaries.
Richard started at TPT – then KTCA – with
Newton’s Apple, where he was Series Producer and then
Executive Producer. For his accomplishments in communicating science to
the public, he was awarded the Faraday Prize by the National Science
Teachers Association in 2004.
Richard now oversees both adult and children’s science programs.
His recent PBS series include DragonflyTV, Make and, most recently,
SciGirls. He also oversees science documentaries, including the recent
two-hour special for NOVA on the history of the telescope, Hunting the
Edge of Space.
He Executive Produced Transistorized!, a documentary on the invention
of the transistor, which won the AAAS Science Journalism prize, and a
two-hour special, Exploring Time, a special on research and the powers
of ten in time. He also served as TPT’s Executive Producer
for other NOVA documentaries, including Absolute Zero and the Conquest
of Cold, Dying to be Thin, on eating disorders, and Flood!, on the 1993
Mississippi disaster.
Richard has been involved in amateur astronomy for the last 15 years.
He observes from his back yard near Marine St. Croix, but enjoys
visiting distant star parties – Stellafane, Nebraska Star Party,

Cosmic Makeover: How the Stars can change your Life
We'll explore how spending time under the stars can help us make a
connection between the larger universe and our inner lives
Bob attended the University of Illinois with a degree in German, and

Bob is a
member of the AAVSO (American Assn. of Variable Star Observers) and
