On our first day, three of us, Ben, Chris and I met at the airport in Salt Lake City. It was snowing hard and we had no other choice but to rent an impressive truck to go through the wild landscapes of Utah. Thanks to Ben, our driver, Chris and I had been able to rest a little bit after a sleepless night. Yet, during the short periods I was awake I was highly impressed by the beautiful wilderness of Utah, such vast open spaces are rare in Europe. We met the rest of the crew, Jon and Catherine, in Hanksville, the last manned area before the surface of Mars. Then, after a few minutes on a chaotic road, every one of us has been pretty excited to land on our cherished red planet: Mars.
For those for who it is the first time, it has been awesome to discover this station, its greenhouse and observatory, lost in the middle of this red desert. For Ben and Jon, veterans of MDRS, after having enjoyed their comebacks, it has been a little bit more painful having to explain to us how everything works! For our first evening onboard, we did not have time to be bored: organizing the Hab, choosing the good room, trying to get to know each other a little bit better and finally celebrating the 29th birthday of Jon. And I have to admit that the red wine bottle of Californian wine that we opened for the occasion was really delicious! Of course we also made plans for the mission and I can tell you that it looks exciting. More information tomorrow!
