Journalist's Report
December 9, 2007
Thomas Hiriart
After a good night sleep, we woke up around 7 am for our first day in the station. First of all, thank you Commander for the nice and peaceful musical alarm, we hope to hear the same tomorrow morning! Once outside my "room", I was instantaneously amazed by the view from the portholes. The sunrise was beautiful. Then during the breakfast, we listed the tasks that have to be done this morning. A lot of them were engineering tasks so Chris and I have been kept busy this morning around the generator or the Greenhab while Ben has checked the hot water system. Step by step the crew becomes more familiar with the numerous systems of the Hab.
Directly after the breakfast, a security briefing was organised by Jon and our Health Security Officer, Catherine. It was a good occasion to be warned of the potential dangers that we could have to deal with during our mission. Then while engineers had fun with the hardware, Catherine made the inventory of the biology and geology lab.
Unsurprisingly, the time has gone very fast this morning. After sandwiches for lunch, in order to familiarize ourselves to the near area around the station, we decided to hike south from the Hab to a hill called "Phobos Peak" – Hum, what’s a strange name... We really enjoyed the opportunity to explore the area as well as to learn more about each other's. Scientifically, it was also very challenging. Indeed, the geology is very unique and varied. We have often wished during the hike that we could have had a geologist with us to explain the formation of rocks and hills. From Phobos Peak, the panoramic view was gorgeous. Our two professional photographers, Ben and Chris, had a great time up there!
Latter in the evening, Don Foutz came to visit and briefed us on a few new engineering protocols. By now, everybody is busy writing his report but we have good hope to be able to watch an episode of “From Earth to the Moon”, a "space geek" series that our dear Commander brought with him on Mars!
Oh, I almost forgot, we will begin the simulation tomorrow. ON TO MARS!
