Journalistic Report

10/12/2007

Thomas Hiriart

This time, Jon chose to wake us up at 6:30 am with some louder music! I guess it was a good decision given the short sleep that we all had. Unfortunately Chris and I did not even have the time to drink the daily needed cup of coffee since the generator was screaming: "Turn me on!". After the breakfast, Jon began to write an impressive - almost scary - list of engineering tasks on the white board. While Jon, Chris and I tried to organise the Greenhab and to fill the potable water tank with some fresh water delivered directly from Earth, Ben and Catherine have worked pretty hard on defining the precise locations, sites and routes for the Halophile sampling. They also configured the GPS units, which, eventually, could prevent us to be lost on Mars. In addition, Catherine defined concretely our scientific goals and then she said, "I now know more about Halophiles than I never did"!

The poor engineers working outside were then pretty happy to be called for a hot chicken soup and they were much more surprised to see Ben dressed in "Marvin the Martian" to celebrate the official beginning of the simulation. Crew 62 is now on Mars!

Unfortunately, it did not prevent Chris and I to work hard in the Greenhab on cleaning some water tanks in order to be able to flush the toilet. Far far away, in the Hab, Cath and Ben did the inventory and readiness of the EVA equipment. And finally, after having writing our reports for Mission Support, we watched an episode of "From the Earth to the Moon” in drinking a warm cup of tea while the snow was covering everything around.
