Journalist's Report
December 16, 2007
Thomas Hiriart
Today is Sunday and for this special occasion, we decided to take some
time to cook a real breakfast. We enjoyed drinking our coffee and tea
with pancakes and eggs. Ben celebrated this special Sunday breakfast in
wearing a real Star trek uniform. We also talked about our different
ways to celebrate Christmas. The fact that Catherine comes from Belgium
and that I come from France made our conversations very open-minded and
truly interesting. I have always liked to learn about people and this
experience is a great opportunity for that. I think we are appreciating
each other more and more.
Today, Catherine, Ben and Chris have planned a long EVA to Salt Wash
and the Valley of the Stars. Based on the sample markers our crew is
the first to do research in this far away area. Once again, Ben was a
great pilot and the EVA crew has been amazed by the beauty of the large
canyon they visited. The special geology of the area provided to
Catherine some incredibly big plates of Gypsum that are supposed to
welcome Halophiles.
During that time, Jon and I, staying at the Hab, have continued to work
on the potable water supply of course! We made good progress in the
morning and we strongly thought that we would be able to take a shower
tonight. Naturally we were quite disappointed when that plan an our two
backup plans did not work. That is the reason why we had to break
simulation tonight to go to Hanksville to buy water. At this point, the
crew health is our concern and getting water our number one priority.
Tonight, the atmosphere is calm and we are all beginning to feel tired.
But no worries, it will be better tomorrow after a good night sleep.
