Today, we did two EVA's. Catherine and Ben did the first one the morning. They took the pressurised rover to "Lith Canyon". The objective was once again to find Halophiles hidden in salt rocks. Apparently, they enjoyed the place but they came back really tired. From what I understood, the hike was not that easy. During that time, Jon, Chris and I tried to fix an unexpected problem. While we have been trying to provide water to the toilet for flushing for several days, it appeared now that water was flowing into the toilet without activating the flush. So we checked the electrical switches and the water pipes. The problem was a pressure valve malfunction. We bypassed it and now, everything is back to normal. We also took care of the Greenhab and of the grey water system.
This afternoon, Jon and I went on EVA with the new ATVs while Chris, Ben and Catherine were on duty to maintain the station. I had a lot of fun with Jon and the landscapes were beautiful. Yet, the purpose of this EVA was to continue on our study concerning the safe travels on inclined slopes. We were trying to build an accurate database of slopes in function of inclination, ground characteristics and safety to travel on. This afternoon, we studied a dozen of different slopes: rocky, sandy, clay. For each of them, we tried to climb it and to see if it would be safe for everybody else.
Tonight after the diner and the reports I will give a presentation. Each crew member will do one. Yesterday, Jon gave one about his work with Stellar Solutions. Tonight, I am going to speak about my experience this summer during the NASA Academy program and about my work at NASA on the GOES project. I am going to avoid to make it too boring!
